Meet Lydia Richards: Your Vino Concierge

Hello and welcome to Vino Concierge! I’m Lydia Richards, and I’m thrilled to launch this blog as your personal vino concierge. For years I’ve worked across wine education, retail, marketing, public relations, and events, and now I’m excited to share the practical knowledge, thoughtful recommendations, and approachable wine stories I’ve gathered as a certified sommelier and wine industry expert. Whether you’re building a home cellar, planning a dinner party, or simply curious about a bottle you spotted at the store, this space is for you!

A little about me

I was born in Panama and have built a career focused on making wine more accessible to underrepresented audiences. I hold a Sommelier Certification from the Sommelier Society of America and WSET Level 3 Advanced Certification, credentials that have shaped my palate and my approach to wine education. In 2017 I founded Vino Concierge, a wine education and consulting company designed to bridge the gap between wine culture and diverse communities through curated tastings, educational programming, and strategic consulting.

Beyond Vino Concierge, I co-founded Hispanics in Wine & Spirits™ (HiWS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to increasing Hispanic and Latine representation across the beverage and hospitality industries through mentorship and advocacy. I also co-created the Sip & Sabor Festival, a two-day celebration of wine, spirits, food, and culture that cultivates professional exchange and community. My work has been recognized in outlets and lists including Wine Enthusiast’s 40 Under 40 Tastemakers, Wine Business Monthly’s Wine Industry Leaders, and Imbibe’s 75 People to Watch. In 2023 I was honored as Executive of the Year by the Hue Society, and in 2024 I was named among USA Today’s Black Changemakers in the Wine Industry.

What you’ll find here

As your Vino Concierge, my goal is to translate professional know-how into useful, everyday guidance. Expect content that falls into three practical areas:

  • Expert wine recommendations: Weekly and monthly picks tailored to seasons, occasions, budgets, and food pairings. As a wine expert and professional sommelier, I’ll recommend bottles with tasting notes, serving suggestions, and why a wine is worth your attention.

  • Pairing and entertaining tips: Clear, confident pairing guidance (not intimidating rules). Whether you need the perfect wine for a weeknight pasta, a plant-based menu, or a celebratory roast, I’ll offer pairings that elevate the meal and the moment.

  • Storage, service, and buying advice: How to store wine properly, building an approachable cellar, reading labels, choosing by region or producer, and spotting sustainable or minimal-intervention winemaking. Practical tips that save you money and help you buy with confidence.

My approach: approachable, inclusive, and rooted in knowledge

Wine shouldn’t be exclusive. As a proud Afro-Latina and founder of initiatives that support diverse voices in the beverage world, I’m committed to demystifying wine and creating space for everyone to enjoy it. My recommendations come from technical training and hands-on experience in the wine industry. But more importantly, they come from listening, to sommeliers, growers, restaurateurs, and wine lovers of all backgrounds.

I favor wines that express place and authenticity: bright, food-friendly wines that tell a story of site, varietal expression, and vintage character. In 2026 I’ll be launching Teffy Wines, a boutique label in Santa Barbara County focused on minimal-intervention, sustainably farmed wines that celebrate community and connection. I can’t wait to share more about that journey here!

How I’ll help you choose wine

Choosing wine is easier when you have a starting point. Here are a few simple ways I’ll help you pick the right bottle:

  • Occasion-based curation: Recommendations for easy weeknights, celebrations, gifts, and seasonal moments.

  • Flavor-first guidance: Instead of memorizing rules, learn to match wines by flavors (acidity, tannin, sweetness, and texture) to the food or mood.

  • Budget-friendly selections: Great wine doesn’t have to be expensive. I’ll share reliable bottles at a range of price points, including small producers doing excellent work.

  • Sustainable and ethical choices: Highlights of organic, biodynamic, and low-intervention producers who prioritize the land and community.

Join the conversation

This blog is meant to be a conversation. I’ll be posting tasting notes, pairings, event recaps, interviews with producers, and occasional deep dives into regions, grape varieties, and wine trends. I also want to hear from you, what would you like to learn? Have a favorite bottle you want me to taste and write about? Planning a dinner and need a pairing? Send your ideas, questions, and bottle dilemmas to info@vinoconcierge.wine and I’ll respond with personalized suggestions when I can.

A final note

Thank you for visiting Vino Concierge and for trusting me as your vino concierge. I’m excited to use this space to share the expertise I’ve built as a professional sommelier and wine industry expert, and to continue advocating for more inclusive, welcoming wine communities. Let’s taste, learn, and celebrate together!

Cheers,

Lydia Richards - Sommelier, entrepreneur, and wine expert
